NEW TO CBD?
What is CBD?
You may have noticed as you’ve been going about your daily life that CBD has seemingly started to pop up everywhere.
Whether that’s coffee shops suddenly selling CBD lattes or wellness spas now offering to give you a CBD facial treatment, there’s certainly a lot of buzz about this new wellness product.
But what is CBD exactly? Why do people take it, and what are its health benefits?
What is CBD?
CBD is an abbreviation for its proper name; cannabidiol. It is a chemical compound that is found and extracted from the cannabis plant.
It is extracted from the hemp species of the Cannabis sativa plant as opposed to the marijuana species, which contains much higher amounts of its cousin chemical tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
It is then used in a wide range of products from oils to gummy bears to help deal with all kinds of mental and physical ailments.
Whilst CBD is a cannabinoid, it does not have any psychoactive properties like THC does. This particular chemical is responsible for the euphoric rush people get from smoking or ingesting marijuana.
CBD has no such properties, and therefore you do not feel altered after taking it, only noticing the positive benefits for your health and wellbeing instead.
How Can You Take CBD?
As alluded to above, CBD is available in many formats. One of the most popular choices is to take CBD as an oil thanks to its fast acting nature.
All you have to do is put a few drops under your tongue and within a few minutes you can begin to feel the effects of this powerful treatment.
If that’s not for you, many others choose to go down the edible route, choosing products such as gummy bears.
The process for edible products is slightly different as it’s absorbed via digestion, which is a lengthier process. However, the effects of the chemical compound last longer by utilizing this absorption method.
The list is nearly endless when it comes to CBD-infused goods. Topical creams, capsules, syrups, teas and coffees are just a few of the available options for this versatile product.
Choosing your method of CBD consumption is a personal choice, and what works for one person may not for another. It’s about finding what works for you.
What Are the Health Benefits of CBD?
As the widespread use of CBD is a fairly recent phenomenon, research surrounding this chemical compound is still in its infancy. However, there have been number promising studies and clinical trials, backing up many of the claims made by its long-term users.
Many take CBD for chronic pain relief, and this clinical trial by the pharmaceutical company Zynerba demonstrated that CBD was effective at relieving pain for those suffering with osteoarthritic knee pain.
CBD has also been scientifically proven to help treat seizure disorders. This is especially the case for suffers of Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which are both severe forms of epilepsy.
The drug used to treat patients who suffer from these syndromes (Epidiolex), is the first treatment containing CBD to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Users also use CBD to help ease the symptoms of a wide range of medical conditions such as: cancer, autism, acne, depression, and anxiety.
Although it’s important to state that evidence of CBD’s efficacy is related to treatment of these conditions is anecdotal at this moment in time.
Finally, many take CBD for recreation purposes to increase overall wellbeing.
It works with your body’s endocannabinoid system by helping to regulate your immune system, appetite, mood, and sleep schedule. By doing so, CBD assists the body in maintaining homeostasis.
Is CBD Legal?
In 2018, President Trump signed into law the Agricultural Improvement Act, which federally legalized the industrial growing of hemp and use of hemp products. It was simultaneously removed from the Controlled Substances Act.
In effect, as long as you are compliant with your state of residence, you can consume CBD products.
However, state policy on CBD products differs quite significantly. Whilst medicinal and recreational use of CBD is legal in states such as California it is illegal in both forms in Idaho.
Check your state legal guidelines to see which restrictions apply to your use of CBD products.
How CBD Works
You may have already heard about the many different health and wellbeing benefits that CBD products can provide. But what you may not know already is exactly how this chemical compound manages to achieve these results.
But fear not, we are here to take you through how CBD interacts with your body, and in particular, your endocannabinoid system.
What is The Endocannabinoid System?
CBD gets to work within your body by interacting with chemical receptors known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
The ECS is found in all mammals and is involved in regulating a wide range of important processes such as anti-inflammatory and immune response. It also has a regulatory effect on other areas including: appetite, mood, anxiety levels and sleep schedules.
Overall, the goal of the ECS is to help our body maintain a state of homeostasis. This is a phase whereby everything in the body is in a state of natural equilibrium and balance.
The endocannabinoids that work within the ECS are neurotransmitters. In other words, they give chemical commands that trigger a biological response.
As humans, we naturally produce our own endocannabinoids, and you may have noticed their effects if you’ve ever experienced a state of natural euphoria such as “runners high”.
What Happens When Our ECS Doesn’t Function Properly?
Since the ECS has such an important role in regulating our body, when it becomes either overactive or underactive it can cause severe health problems as the body can no longer sufficiently maintain homeostasis.
Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CECD) is a condition caused by the malfunctioning of the ECS system.
This can lead to various physical and mental health issues that come on without warning such as arthritis, autoimmune disorders, chronic pain, depression, or anxiety.
How Does CBD Help Your Endocannabinoid System?
When a human produces cannabinoids they are known as endocannabinoids. However, when these chemical compounds are produced in plants they are known as phytocannabinoids.
CBD is a phytocannabinoid, and is in fact just one of over 100 that are currently found in the hemp species of cannabis plants.
By taking CBD, you help to support the ECS with its daily functions, maintaining your body’s natural rhythms and ensuring homeostasis is achieved.
It also acts as a protector of the ECS overall, helping to prevent chronic health conditions from occurring in the first place.
What is the Best Way to Take CBD?
When it comes to taking CBD, there are no right or wrong answers. It’s more important to find a product that suits your body and your lifestyle.
With CBD oil, all you need is a few drops under your tongue and it will get to work within a few short minutes.
If you choose to take edible products such as gummies or capsules, it will take a lot longer to notice the effects since the CBD is released after digestion. However, the effects of the CBD (once digested) last longer than if taken orally.
With our wide range of CBD products, you’re guaranteed to find something that works for you.
